The total amount of $ will not change regardless the amount of 20 cents coins were exchanged for 10 cents coins. It can be deduced that the total amount of money is $2.80. For a Pri 3 kid to understand, I guess you can let your child to try guess and check method.

Let just take Muthu has 5 20 cents and 10 cents coins respectively and Sam has 7 20 cents and 10 cents coins respectively. From here deduce the total amount of $ they had. If the total amount of $ is larger than $2.80, reduce the number of 20 cents coins and vice versa. Do so until you get the right amount.
