Assuming blocks only have Kinetic Energy in the beginning, apply the Principle of Conservation of Energy.

In any collision, momentum is conserved. Thus you can use Principle of conservation of momentum.

Principle of conservation of energy however can only be used in elastic collisions. In inelastic collisions energy is NOT conserved!
