Since 1/4 of the total cupcakes in left, we can deduce that 2/5 of the cupcakes that were remaining from the 3/5 sold in the afternoon is equivalent to the 1/4 of total cupcakes. So let X= 1 unit for the 1/4 of the total cupcakes and Y= 1 unit of the total cupcakes sold in the afternoon.
We get the equations: 3X=3Y+84
and X=2Y. Then we can solve for either X or Y and then find the total which is 4X or 5Y+84. Hope this helps
