We look at Ben and Josh separately. 1 hour passed for Ben must also be an hour passed for Josh. For example, Ben takes 5 hours to paint a house while Josh only takes 2 hours to paint a house. In that 5 hours, Josh would've painted 2 houses already. Thus, it takes them 5+4 hours to paint 3 houses. Same concept for the painting of the fence. Hope this helps!
