It’s a simplification of the sum of probabilities, using the equation where the sum of all probabilities = 1.

E.g In a case where we only have 2 outcomes A or B,
P(A) + P(B) = 1
Therefore, P(A) = 1 - P(B)

This is simply formula for sum to nth term for gp.
T_n=ar-^(n-1)
S_n=a(1-r^n)/(1-r)
