The step with a red box is to complete a square within an expression itself.
Suppose you have x^2 - ax
To complete the square for above expression, add and subtract (a/2)^2 at the same time giving you
x^2 - ax + (a/2)^2 - (a/2)^2
= [x-(a/2)^2] - (a/2)^2
