First we compute the ratio of r+t : s using the given fraction.
Second we know that the shaded area of S if 1/4. Using that, we can calculate the ration of the shaded area of S.
Shaded area of R+T is the same as S, thus the same ratio will be given.

Thanks for helping Shi Yi but I don't think the answer is correct. Your answer of 17 / 36 suggests that close to half of the diagram is shaded, which is not the case. Imagine if all 3 shapes are the same size and each is 1/ 4 shaded. We cannot conveniently have 1/ 4 + 1/ 4 + 1/4 and say 3/ 4 of the diagram is shaded. Good attempt though. Can anyone else help?
