I believe this question ask for solutions using graphical method. Plot y=log(3x+1) and y=2^x-1. The intersect is the solution.
You would require a GC to solve this question. This shouldn't be a secondary school question. :/

You can't use algebra to solve a logarithm and an exponential function in the same equation. Use a graphical method to find the answer.
