Can you please explain how u get total area Area 2 5/8

The total area is not 3 squares because there are some overlapping between sq a and sq b, sq a and sq c. If you can imagine the whole picture, it is actually made up of sq b, sq c and the unshaded area of sq a, which is 5/8 of sq a since 3/8 of sq a is shaded. Hope this explained.
