The unknown "x" refers to the same amount of cash both of them have before shopping.

The first equation (1) is for Carol, where she spends $1085. After deducting the amount spent, she has "y" amount of money left.

The second equation (2) is for Grace, where she spends $345. After deducting the amount spent, she has "6y" amount of money left because she has 6 times more than Carol.

So just put the (1) equation into (2) equation to find the "x".
