Step 1: change the mix number to ratio
Step 2: change to the similar denominator possible
Step 3: multiple first before plus/ minus
-1/3 + 17/6 - 3/8 x 5/3
= (-2+17)/6 - 5/8
= 15/6 - 5/8
= 5/2 - 5/8
= 20/8 - 5/8
=15/8
= 1 7/8
Step 2: change to the similar denominator possible
