Simply use a graph paper and plot several points (maybe 7-10 points ) then draw your curve. Then take a ruler and dash your way from the desired x values up to your curve and then dash horizontally across to your y-axis and read off y values.

You MUST use your graph to get the y values but you SHOULD use your calculator to check and make sure the values you obtained is not too far off the actual ones.

Firstly, a curve with an equation in the form of y=a^x, where a is positive, can never touch the x-axis.

Secondly, you can always verify by substituting x=-1. In which case you'll get y=3^(-1)=1/3.
