Imagine a ball attached by a string and rolling in circles on a table. The only force acting on the ball is it's weight which is downwards and hence perpendicar to the direction the ball is moving. Hence, the ball will be in circular motion at a constant velocity as there's no tangential force acting on the ball (parallel to the table) - in the direction the ball is moving.
