Hello teacher I don't understand. I thought I am suppose to divide by 5 because there is 5 cupcakes in a set. I done similar questions and I will divide by the number of items in a set.

Hi JM,

You are not suppose to divide by 5. Because the last cupcake is free.

So in the question, Mrs Chow paid for 24 cupcakes. Means she bought 24. Since for every 4 cupcake bought, you will get one free cupcake.

That means mrs chow would get 24/4 = 6 free cupcakes. :)

As you get 1 free cupcake for every 4 cupcakes you buy (pay for), you should divide 24 by 4 to get the number of free cupcakes you would get.
