Second method is to simply count the empty spaces that the eraser occupy but the paper clip dont.

i.e. The gaps at 2-3cm and 8-10cm.

1+2=3cm

Use model parts, 1 small square = 1 cm.
Alternatively, use real life examples (fingers, pencils) to understand concept before moving on to bigger numbers.
