after giving 165 postcards to Jean, Bryan had (492-165=)327 postcards. 327 was 58 less than what Jean had after the transfer. So, Jean had 327+58=385 postcards after the transfer. She gained 165 postcards from the transfer. So, before the transfer, she had 385-165=220 postcards.
