The family refers to the group. Elements of the same family exhibit similar chemical properties.

Elements of the same family have the same number of valence electrons. Thus they react in a similar function eg tendency of elements of same family to lose/ gain electrons is similar. Eg for group 1 elements, they have 1 valence electron and have a great tendency to lose electron(efoa between valence electrons and nucleus is weak) therefore they are reactive. (Rmb group 1 metals react vigorously with water)
