Why the ratio is 5,8,3?
From the amount they invested:
15000:24000:9000 , all divide by 3000,
gives simplest form of 5:8:3.
Question said profit is shared according to the ratio they invested...

But, how to know use 3000 to devide?
You can try to divide 1000 first, then continue to divide further, till the simplest ratio.
15000:24000:9000
Divide 1000 get
15:24:9
Can divide 3 again, get
5:8:3, simplest.
Divide 1000 get
15:24:9
Can divide 3 again, get
5:8:3, simplest.
