8 small cubes to become a bigger cube, is for it to be a 2x2x2 cube.
So just find the area of 1 side, then multiply by 6 faces of the cube.

Length of 1 small cube = 6/2 = 3cm
Surface area for 1 side of 2x2x2 cube = 3*3*4 = 36cm^2
Total surface area of cube = 36 * 6 = 216 cm^2

Cut into 2 big cubes. 1 face of the big cube is 6x6=36cm2. 2 cubes will have 36x2=72cm2 of unpainted area.
