Draw a horizontal line across your graph at y=-27.5. The x coordinates of the 2 points of intersection between your curve graph and the horizontal line y=-27.5 will be the 2 answers for x.

2x²-8x-24=-40
y=-40
The graph of y=2x²-8x-24 lies entirely above the horizontal line y=-40. The minimum point (2,-33) of y=2x²-8x-24 also lies above y=-40. There are no points of intersection, therefore no solutions.
