Can see that you have already derived the formula for getting the number of white squares. Now you just have to link back to the figure number which is figure number + 1.

Number of white squares for
Figure 1: (2 x 2) - 2 = 2
Figure 2: (3 x 3) - 3 = 6
Figure 3: (4 x 4) - 4 = 12
Figure 30: (31 x 31) - 31 = 930

Alternatively, if you remove the black squares, you can see the white squares form a rectangle with one side = figure number and the other side figure number + 1.

Figure 1: 1 x 2 = 2
Figure 2: 2 x 3 = 6
Figure 3: 3 x 4 = 12
Figure 30: 30 x 31 = 930
