Drawing out the branches can help you visualise but cannot solve by multiplying up the branches as the question does not tell you what are the proportions of chocolate and vanilla cupcakes at the start.

So instead of converting the units to the same starting point, you need to eliminate the different units so that you are left with either the chocolate or vanilla unit and then derive the rest.
