1. Find the total area of both squares.
2. Find the area of the 2 unshaded triangles that are beside the shaded part
3. Take the total area - the 2 unshaded triangles = shaded part :)

You are in the right track by extending lines GF and CD to form a large rectangle. Continue by finding each of the 3 unshaded areas and subtract them from the area of large rectangle.
