Backwards calculation.
Peter gave John ⅓.
Peter left ⅔
As given, both have equal amount in the end.
$2000÷2 =$1000
Each have $1000 in the end.
So,
Peter ⅔ →$1000
Peter ⅓ → $500

John received ⅓ from Peter became $1000
John before received ⅓ = 1000 - 500 = 500

John gave ⅗ to Peter at 1st, so John left ⅖ →500
So, ⅕ →250
Therefore, John at 1st 5/5 = 250×5 =$1250

Then Peter at 1st = 2000-1250=$750.

Hope this explanation clear to you.
