This question is a rather commonly asked challenging question.
For this question, first use the concept of logarithms to express one equation in terms of x and y (or the variables given).
Next, use substitution to express the other equation in terms of one variable only. At this point, the equation should be able to be expressed as a quadratic equation. You can then introduce a third variable (in this case, a) to solve the quadratic equation and solve for x followed by y.
