You can use algebra to solve this question. Here's how:

Let the number of rows (before adding more chairs) be x.
Then the total number of chairs in the hall is 30 x.

After adding 24 more chairs,

Total number of chairs = 30 x + 24
Total number of rows = x + 7

Since there are now 27 chairs in each row,
Total number of chairs = 27 × (x + 7)
= 27 x + 189

Note that 27 x + 189 = 30 x + 24.
(subtract 27 x from both sides)

189 = 3 x + 24
(subtracat 24 from both sides)
165 = 3 x

x = 165 ÷ 3 = 55

Total no. of chairs at first = 55 × 30
= 1650 chairs
