After throwing 2/5 of the longans and selling away another 1/5, the seller is left with 2/5 longans, or 16 longans.

To find the original number, simply determine what 1/5 longans represent. If 16 is 2/5, divide the number by 2 to get 8 or 1/5 longans. From there, multiply 8 by 5 to find that the seller had bought 40 longans.
