Draw out a model with 9 units.

Alvin's share of cookies = 2/3 = 6/9

Theodore's share of cookies = 2/3 of the remaining. Hence, 2/3 x 1/3 = 2/9

The last unshaded box will represent Simon cookies = 2

Since 1 unit = 2 cookies,

Number of cookies Alvin have (6 units) = (6x2) + 5 cookies =17 cookies.

Hope this helps

The previous answer is wrong and not possible for Alvin to have 17 cookies if you work backwards. Alvin has 57 cookies, total number of cookies in the tin is 78 cookies
