Sorry I was not specific enough. M(AB) means the Gradient of the line segment AB. This is calculated using the formula

Y1 - Y2
————
X1 - X2

where (X1,Y1) and (X2,Y2) are the coordinates of the points respectively.

When the gradients of 2 line segments are equal they must be parallel and vice versa. Hope this clarifies.
