Concept
Total unchanged

1+4=5
3+5=8
LCM (5,8)=40
A=8×1=8
B=5×3=15
C=40-8-15=17
C-B=17-15=2
2:40=$90:$1800

Ans: $1800

The point is for the students to realise that the total should remain unchanged (since it involves the same people), but the first ratio shows that the total is “5” while the second ratio shows that the total is “8” (so there is kind of a “conflict” with the “unchanged” clause).

In this case drawing the model would require us to divide the “5” and the “8” until we see 40 equal lengths each, but I think that cutting the model into 40 equal lengths each is not reasonable for an average student.

By the time a P5 student gets into P6, the model diagrams become very hard to draw, and that is the point where model drawings start to be less frequently used.
