You can think of f(x) as y. Note that the bracket does not mean multiply.

Oh thank you! But what does the bracket for then?

The bracket is there to indicate the type of function f is.

When we write f(x), we mean to say that the function f is going to be expressed in terms of x (so the x is bracketed, just like how I use brackets for this year).

In general, a function is a rule to generate some outputs based on several inputs.

For example, f(x) = x + 2 is a function because inputting values of x will get us values of the output (which we can think of as “y”).

Here, the rule is x + 2, meaning to say “I add 2 to every input”.

You will learn in the future (beyond O Level) that a function of x will only have a single output for every value of x (it doesn’t make sense if substituting x = 2 into “x + 2” gets us two different results, correct?).

Yes f(x) = y.

When we write y = x + 1 we mean the value of y is dependent on the value of x. When x = 1, y will have a value of 1 + 1 = 2, and when x = 2 y will be 3 and so on.

Thus we say that y is a function of x and we can write y as f(x).

Hope this helps.
