You are trying to compare two numbers.

When we count numbers, we count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. We say that 5 is greater than 1.

(a)

3869 is smaller than 85945, because 3869 comes first when we do the counting.

(b)

85699 is NOT greater than 85945, because 85699 comes first when we do the counting.

To check which number is bigger, we align the digits in the correct place.

Comparing 85699 and 85945,
- both the digits in the ten thousands place are 8
- both the digits in the thousands place are 5
- digit 6 in the hundreds place of 85699 is smaller than digit 9 in the hundreds place of 85945

Because of this, 85699 is smaller than 85945, so statement (b) is false.

See 1 Answer

Statement (b) is wrong,

85699 is not greater than 85945, it is smaller, has the hundredths value (6) is smaller
