for (a), i think mistake in the factorization ...
should be
x^2-x-12=0
(x-4)(x+3) = 0
x = 4 or -3
both these answers satisfy the original equation.
alternative for (b)
let u = 3x+4
2u^2-5u+3 = 0
(2u-3)(u-1) = 0
u = 3/2 or u=1
3x+4 = 3/2 or 3x+4 = 1
3x=-5/2 or 3x=-3
x=-5/6 or -1
should be
