Im quite confused how can you find the area when only the base is given

You can use this method when only the length of the diagonal is given and the other 2 sides are the same:

Treat this triangle as one quarter of a big square. If you can imagine or by drawing out, you will find that the big square has a length of 5 cm.

Area of the square is 25 cm2 and thus area of the triangle is 25 ÷ 4 = 6.25 cm2

One other restriction of this method is that it must be a right anglr triangle too
