"y=2x^2 - 8x + p" is the equation of a curve (the graph i drew).
So, when they say the curve> 0, they are referring to the part of the curve that is positive, which is the part of the curve that is above the x-axis. When they say the solutions to the equation is x<-1 or x>5, they mean that the curve is positive for x<-1 and x>5 (also meaning curve is negative from -1
