Just wanted to clarify for the expression to be more than 0, which is positive, it is a must for the discriminant < 0 and a > 0 so that the graph lies completely above the x-axis with no x-intercept right?

The underlying idea is what you mentioned - the fact that the expression is always greater than zero implies that its graph is entirely above the x-axis.

The "a > 0" is necessary because only "smiley face" curves are capable of being "always positive". No "sad face" curves can be "always positive".
