general steps to solve maxima / minima problems.

1. determine variable to be optimized.
2. express variable to be optimized in terms of variable that can change.
3. differentiate & find stationary value.
4. check for maximum / minimum.

note that …
carry maximum amount of water
=> maximum volume
=> maximum cross-section area.

even if the question does not say need to check for nature of stationary point, should still automatically check.
