The extra electron comes from an external source, hence it contains a -1 charge. This is why there’s a general rule in chemistry that ions exists in pairs (ie. Cations and anions). NH2- in the anion, while the cation is the chemical species that has donated the extra electron to the nitrogen forming a -1 charge.
