Can help to explain why the solution is to find dy/dx?.. what is the purpose of indicating that the equation of the normal to curve is x=k when we are not asking to find k? Thks

Note that x=k is a vertical line. If the normal is vertical, then the tangent must be horizontal. So this is just an indirect (& clever!) way of telling you to find x where dy/dx=0. The value of k is immaterial here.
