I let the amount after spending on smart phone be 5 u. After spending 2/5 of this (means 2u) he had 3 u left. If this 3 u is 1/4 of the original this means the original was 4 x 3 = 12u. The amount spent on smart phone is thus 12u - 5u = 7u. Hope this clarifies.

By the way I hope I had read all the numbers correctly from the hand written question.
