343 apples, 657 oranges.
After working out the number of apples bought, simply deduct 343 from 1000 to establish the number of oranges bought, hence 1000 - 343 = 657 oranges.
From here, you can check the answer, if 7 apples cost $4, then 1 apple would cost $4/7. And if 9 oranges cost $11, then 1 orange would cost $11/9. If you multiply these accordingly to the 343 apples and 657 oranges, you will arrive at $999 which is the total amount spent on the fruits;
343*(4/7) + 657*(11/9) = $999.
