a)
1 carton can contain 250 cans
2 cartons can contain 2*250 =500
3 cartons can contain 3*250 =750
4 cartons can contain 4*250 = 1000
5 cartons can contain 5*250 = 1250
6 cartons can contain 6*250 =1500

so just need 6 cartons to pack 1425 cans

b) zero cans left after using 6 cartons

I think the fact that they wanted “how many cans were left unpacked” suggests that the earlier cartons must be complete ones.

For this question, we have 5 cartons with 175 cans left over.

Maybe the question could have been better indicated at the start as “the cans are packed into several complete cartons, with some cans being left over”.

Normally otherwise they would ask “what is the minimum number of cartons required to pack all the cans”.
