You can use algebra to solve this question. You can let either Mary or Chris' stickers be x, but usually, I let the smaller number be x because I find it easier to work with + signs than - signs. So I let Chris' stickers be x and Mary's = x + 404.
Add in the number of stickers that their mum gave each of them and you have Mary's stickers = x + 456 while Chris' = x + 60. Because Mary's stickers is 4 times Chris', x + 456 = 4 (x + 60). Solve for x.
