Part a) just substitute x = 2 into the equation.
Part b) carry out long division. Divide the equation on the left by (x - 2)

Long division for part b would not work immediately because the ax - 3 in the expression (x - 2) Q(x) + ax - 3 is of the same degree as the (x - 2) divisor.

One idea is to bring the ax - 3 to the other side before doing long division to ensure that the remainder is of a lower degree than the divisor.

For (i), we sub x = 2 so that we can remove the polynomial Q(x). Finding a would be easier then.
