f(x) = 2(x + 1)(x^2 - 4x + 2) = 0
Consider x^2 - 4x + 2 = 0
Discriminant = (-4)^2 - 4(1)(2) = 8 > 0
x^2 - 4x + 2 = 0 has 2 distinct real roots

Hence f(x) = 0 has 3 real roots.

Hope you understand. And highest degree of power will determine the total number of roots, which in this case is 3. The rest of the work is to determine how many are REAL roots.
