8 is a factor of 56.
But 2 and 4 are factors of 8.
It follows that 2 and 4 are also factors of 56. Correct?

We use a similar idea here.

x^2 - 2x - 3 = (x - 3) (x + 1)

Both (x - 3) and (x + 1) are factors of that expression.

From there, we let both f(3) and f(-1) equal zero since there is no resultant remainder in each case.

We solve the two equations simultaneously afterwards.
