In diagram 1 , When the switch is closed , it forms a closed circuit. Electricity is flowing through the circuit and allows the electromagnet to work. In diagram 2 , when the switch is closed , the electromagnet would attract the metal pieces from the sand and it would be released when the switch is open and forms an open circuit.
