Notice how he has 1/4 of his total money left. This is equivalent to 5/9 of his remaining money left (he spent 4/9 of his remaining money).
So based on the model the 5 small units of the remaining money is equal to 1 unit of total money.
Hence 1 small unit = 1/5 unit
So his total remaining money = 9 small units.

Now, if 1 unit = 5 small unit
4 unit = 20 small units

Since 4+5=9 small units is his remaining money, 20-9=11 small units is the $165 he initially spent.

Hope this helps !

hello! thank you for your help!! may i ask how did you get 11 units? i understand 1 big unit=5 units, but not sure why 4/9 would be converted to 6 small units.
