The x-coordinates of B and C are zero, since both B and C lie on the y-axis.

The x-coordinates of A and D are 5, since A is (5, 5) and D lies along the line x = 5.

This goes to show that BC and AD are vertical lines and are therefore parallel.

That's what a trapezium is all about - a figure with exactly one pair of parallel lines.

The distance between the parallel sides must be 5 units, which is basically the difference between x = 0 and x = 5.

For part (ii), we simply find the y-coordinate of D and then find the lengths AD and BC as well as this 5-unit distance (which is kind of the perpendicular height of the trapezium). Then, we use the trapezium area formula 1/2 x (sum of parallel lengths) x perpendicular height.
