Dot, the $8 is only awarded upon the completion of 10 parcels delivered. So, we will count the money in blocks of 10 parcels.

For 10 parcels, the total money earned
= 10 x $6 + that bonus $8
= $68

He earned $284 altogether. How many blocks of 10 parcels is this?

If we take 284 divided by 68, we get 4 wholes...and a remainder of 12.

This goes to show that 4 groups of 10 parcels (totalling 4 x $68 = $272) were completed.

The remaining $12 (i.e. our remainder) comes from two further parcels delivered.

So, 42 parcels are delivered in total.
